Title: The Bastard Punctuation
British, Born 1966
Materials : Charcoal
The visual appearance of her series caught my eye across the room. Some were more interesting than others that I actually thought could stand on its own. My favorite compositions of her 'punctuation' were the oddest placed ones such as the comma and the period; which makes perfect sense for placement in grammar terms. I was also attracted to the slight dirtiness of the piece which is unusual for me. As I got closer to the piece the details of different plane parts and textures were revealed in the punctuation marks. The use of the parts was less important to me; I was more drawn to the darks and lights which made the compositions beautiful and compelling along with the placement.
In her study of trying to create imagery art, she took many notes which gave her the idea of using them as the images themselves. "The fighter plane drawings are a reversion to something quite dumb but also universal and historical, which is the way that we draw out things and render them in a recognizable form—the way we feel the need to draw out anxieties. On one level, the act of drawing is a kind of primitive, infantile activity." (http://www.fionabanner.com/words/indialogue.htm)
